With economic growth, sci-tech momentum, and tariff policy high on the agenda, China's “Two Sessions,” the most important annual event on the nation's political calendar, are back in the limelight. One of the two sessions is the convention of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the highest organ of state power and the country’s top legislature. In the week-long deliberations, nearly 3,000 NPC deputies review legal drafts and vote on national laws.
Our team, “Sinical China,” has made a documentary on China’s legislature, including interviews with the NPC Standing Committee, local legislative bodies, NPC deputies, relevant government departments, and ordinary citizens who take part in the process. It expands on an elaborate legislative journey that encompasses five-year and annual legislative plans, drafting laws, sponsoring bills, deliberations and reviews, voting on pending laws, and eventual promulgation.
From the sprawling metropolis gearing up to be the epicenter of the burgeoning low-altitude economy to the verdant rainforest that shelters the world's most endangered primate, we took to the road to uncover what is behind lawmaking in the world’s second-largest economy.
We also made a documentary that elaborates on the role of the National People’s Congress:
We also shot a video that delves into the life of three NPC deputies: a welder in a nuclear power plant, a countryside teacher in the border area, and a grassroots official who has made villagers rich in unconventional ways. Here’s the full video:
